Description
I was curious to see how this famous image would look in black and white. I like it & hope you will too.
Grant Wood's American Gothic (1930) famous painting. Original from Wikimedia Commons. Digitally enhanced by rawpixel and Bob Pardue.
The American Gothic painting was painted by Grant Wood in 1930. The house in the painting is based on a real house in Iowa that Wood saw. The title 'American Gothic' is a reference to the neo-Gothic architectural style of this house.
After his father passed away in 1901, Wood's mother moved the family to Cedar Rapids, where Wood began working as an apprentice in a local metal shop. Wood was born in 1891 in rural Iowa. The American Gothic painting is loved by millions.
After graduating from Washington High School, Wood enrolled in The Handicraft Guild, an art school run entirely by women in Minneapolis (now a prominent artist collective in the city). The Guild claims that he painted American Gothic there later.
