Learn more about Independence Rock, WY. Approximately 130 feet high, 1,900 feet long, and 850 feet wide, Independence Rock is a large granite rock. In western Natrona County, Wyoming, along Wyoming Highway 220, lies the Wyoming state historic site. On the Oregon, Mormon, and California emigrant trails, it formed a prominent and well-known landmark during the mid-19th century. In 1840, Father Pierre-Jean De Smet called it the Register of the Desert because many of these emigrants carved their names on it.
