Description
Black and white version of New Masses (1926) by Frank Walts. Public domain image from the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. Digitally enhanced by rawpixel and Bob Pardue.
The New Masses, an American political and literary magazine ran from 1926 to 1948 and featured some of the most iconic illustrations of the era. One particular illustrator, Frank Walts, contributed a number of pieces to the magazine during its publication run.
Walts' approach to the art for the New Masses was highly stylized and used exaggerated shapes and angles to create bold images that were meant to evoke emotion in the readers.
His vintage illustrations for the magazine were often full of symbolism and metaphor, drawing on the battle between communism and capitalism as well as the fight for gender equality and civil rights.
We have digitally enhanced this classic Japanese artwork to bring back its original beauty. The vintage illustration is available as a framed print, stretched canvas wall art and other options for wall hanging and room decor.
