Description
Philae illustration by David Roberts (1796–1864). Original from The New York Public Library. Digitally enhanced by rawpixel and Bob Pardue.
David Roberts (1796–1864) was a Scottish painter and lithographer, best known for his extensive work of topographical views in Egypt, the Levant and India, which were published as aquatints.
From 1820 to 1842, he was a lithographer for the London printing firm F. J and C. Rivington. Roberts later traveled extensively in the Middle East, including to Cyprus, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Greece. He wrote, "I distinguished myself by being the first artist who had penetrated into the interior of the country; who, entering the dark recesses of the tombs and ruins, climbed the desolating mountains, and who, while the plagues of locusts and cholera held possession of the land, remained with unflinching resolution, determined to fix upon canvas the scenes of desolation".
He became renowned for producing detailed watercolour sketches and aquatints of architectural and archaeological sites, which he then turned into lithographic prints. His work was widely admired and praised by contemporary art critics, most notably author and art critic John Ruskin, who wrote that Roberts should be cherished for centuries as "perhaps the greatest architectural deliminator of his time".
This pastel print by David Roberts is available as and art print, canvas or framed print for office or living room decor.
