Photo of the historic shell-shaped Shell service station at Winston-Salem North Carolina, USA.
If you’re ever on a road trip through Winston-Salem, North Carolina, you won’t want to miss the Shell Shaped Shell Station. This unusual building is not only a roadside oddity, but also a way to get a few necessities, plus a few smiles, while you’re out and about. The Shell Shaped Shell Station’s history goes back nearly a decade when it was built by Stanley Frank in 1985. At the time, the station didn’t have gas pumps, as it was initially intended to be a novelty item with no functional purpose.
But, after many years of operating solely as a gift shop and restaurant, it finally got its first set of pumps in 1998. The station is constructed in the same shape as a shell, with the roof being in the form of a huge turtle shell.
Even the windows and doors fit the overall shape of the building. On the inside, visitors will find reminders of the original shell shape, such as walls made from sea shells and counters made from scallop shells.
At the Shell Shaped Shell Station, you could at one time find all the convenience store essentials you need on the go, like snacks, drinks, candy, and other supplies. And, of course, you could fill up your car with some affordable, high-octane petrol.
Visit the Shell Shaped Shell Station and you’ll get more than just the necessities. It’s a great place to take a break during a long drive, plus a great spot to snap a few photos of the distinctive building. It may not be a destination, but it’s certainly an experience! This picture makes a great addition for wall art in a den or office; especially for those in the oil or gas industry.
