Description
Photo of an early cotton press located in South Carolina USA -- built in 1798 and thought to be the oldest cotton press in existence.
Located on private property in Latta, SC, this eye-catching contraption may perplex some motorists, but locals recognize it as an eighteenth-century cotton industry piece of equipment.
It is possible that this is the oldest remaining cotton press in the United States, as it was built in 1798 and is the only remaining cotton press of its kind in South Carolina.
As the cotton industry flourished across South Carolina after the , it was built for planter John Bethea.
A Berry descendant relocated it to its current location in 1950 after it belonged to cotton planter Henry Berry of Berry's Crossroads.
Canvas prints, framed prints, and other options are available for the Latta South Carolina cotton press picture.
