Emily Clare Harvey gave this album to her sister-in-law Madge—Margaret Augusta Shaw—in commemoration of Spencer Philip Harvey's wedding to Margaret Augusta Shaw on February 19, 1868, and it contains pictures of Shaw and Harvey relatives. Whether the album was intended as a joyous expression of the union of the two families, or whether it was made with memorial overtones after Spencer died less than a year later at age twenty-eight, is unclear.
While not photocollages themselves, the pages of this standard manufactured album had been decorated with drawings and watercolors around each portrait. John Monson Shaw, Madge's older brother, is surrounded by hunting and fishing motifs.
Emma Jane Mansel is surrounded by flowers, symbols of affection, innocence, and delicacy, such as morning glories, daisies, and cornflowers. This delightful vintage photograph makes an interesting piece of artwork for den, office or bathroom decor.
