Description
Photo of USS Yorktown aircraft carrier Charleston SC USA. This famous World War II ship is docked at Patriot's Point and is open to South Carolina visitors.
The USS Yorktown, one of the most famous aircraft carriers ever to serve in the United States Navy, is now a part of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston, South Carolina. Launched in April of 1943, the USS Yorktown saw extensive service in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of World War II, earning 11 Battle Stars.
The ship was originally named after the Revolutionary War’s Battle of Yorktown, but was quickly renamed in honor of the sunken USS Yorktown, which had been lost at the Battle of Midway. The new Yorktown went on to serve valiantly in the war, including participation in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, and was awarded four Presidential Unit Citations for its bravery and service.
After the war, the USS Yorktown continued to serve in the US Navy for 27 years before officially being decommissioned in 1970. In 1975, it was donated to the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, where it now serves as a museum ship, teaching visitors about the history of the US Navy and the aircraft carrier’s role in the war.
