Description
Fine art photo in square format of the historic Bridge of Lions connecting St Augustine to Anastasia Island Florida, USA.
In the mid-1920s, the Bridge of Lions was built to connect St. Augustine on the mainland with Anastasia Island, where significant development was just beginning.
Approximately 8,500 northbound and 9,000 southbound vehicles pass along State Road A1A near the Bridge of Lions downtown on an average day.
Using the same dredging techniques that he had used for his Davis Islands project in Tampa, D.P. Davis aimed to drain a marshy swamp on Anastasia Island and build a residential community called Davis Shores. Construction was stopped shortly after the project began due to the real estate boom.
In spite of being considered a failure, the original project provided the impetus behind the creation of St. Augustine's iconic Bridge of Lions. This has remained an icon of historic St. Augustine ever since.
Commercial and recreational boats can pass under the bridge when it is up, and it is a double-leaf bascule bridge, also called a drawbridge.
The Saint Augustine bridge works for living room or den wall art and makes a great gift idea for drawbridge lovers.
