During the summer, San Diego Lifeguards patrol nine permanent lifeguard stations and dozens of seasonal lifeguard stations along 17 miles of coastline around Mission Bay Park.
San Diego has one of the largest professional lifeguard services in the country with close to 300 lifeguards.
In 1923, Spade Burns was appointed the first chief lifeguard and worked at Police Substation No. 1.
