The Glore Psychiatric Museum in St Joseph, Missouri is a unique experience that provides an educational look into the history of mental health and the changes in the treatment of mental illness over the centuries.
Established in 1971 by the St Joseph State Hospital staff, the museum utilizes actual artifacts and displays to illustrate the evolution of psychiatry.
Visitors to the museum could see items such as original serpentine quilts created during the Depression era by one of the patients, equipment used to treat patients such as an electro shock machine, a variety of therapeutic instruments, and clothing that was worn by the patients.
There are also many interactive elements, such as a simulated “snake pit” of the 1930s and a recreation of a patient’s room from the 1960s.
The museum strives to create a respectful and realistic view of mental illness and its treatment. This is achieved through its interactive displays, documents, and thoughtful arrangement of artifacts.
Each exhibit is accompanied by interpretive text panels, photographs and audio clips. The museum serves to provide a better understanding of mental illness and offer an insight into what was once considered regular care for those suffering from mental illnesses. The Glore Psychiatric Museum aims to break down the stigma associated with mental health and create a comfortable space where visitors can learn.
