Artist's Description
Originally, this watercolor painting by James M. Sommerville and was one of the first American submarine illustrations. The artist lived from 1825 till 1859 and was an amateur naturalist, a physician, member of the Academy of Natural Sciences, as well as an artist and a trustee of the Pennsylvania Academy. Sommerville was most likely the designer of the watercolor. This work has been remastered for artwork prints and you can view the original at
