The Mill is a famous painting by the Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn.
The painting depicts a scene of a windmill, a peasant and his boat. It was painted in the 1600s, during the height of the Dutch Golden Age. The Mill is one of Rembrandt’s few landscapes and is thought to be a reflection of the Netherlands at the time, with its combination of unstoppable industry, poverty and natural beauty.
As Rembrandt is famous for, the famous art piece uses light and shade to create a sense of realism, with the darker colors at the front of the scene and the lighter colors in the background. It is a classic example of Rembrandt’s use of chiaroscuro, or “light-dark”, to suggest the texture of the figures and their relationship to the sky and land.
