The Guitar Player is a famous painting by the Dutch Baroque era artist Johannes Vermeer. Painted in oil on canvas, the work of art was completed between 1672 and 1675 and it is currently on display at the National Gallery in London.
The famous painting depicts a young woman playing the guitar, dressed in a richly decorated yellow and brown gown, who is seated at a slightly turned angle. She is holding a lute-like instrument in her hands. She appears to be in the act of playing the instrument and her concentration is evident.
Her head is slightly tilted, her eyes are half closed, and she has a slight smile on her lips. The Guitar Player also features traditional Dutch components such as its light-filled space, orderly arrangement of objects, and its sober color palette.
The muted colors of the painting, combined with its attention to detail, have made it one of the most admired and beloved works of its time.
Vermeer's vintage painting of The Guitar Player has been called "a meditation on music, painting and contemplation" and is an example of his masterful use of light and shadow. It is no wonder that this artwork continues to captivate viewers centuries after its creation.
