The Last Supper is a renowned Renaissance painting created by the master painter, Leonardo da Vinci. The painting is housed in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Milan and it depicts the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus with his twelve apostles. The feast is described in the Gospel of John, 13:21.
This famous painting is striking for its intricate details and its vibrant dynamics. In addition to its physical intricacies, it is also noteworthy for its symbolic meanings.
The composition is symmetrical and well-balanced, with three groups of four figures on both sides of the table. The figures are interacting with one another in different ways, often conveying their different emotions about the news that Jesus has just revealed to them - that one of them will betray him.
The painting is significant in that it captures the tense atmosphere of this moment in time, in which Jesus and his disciples reacted to the announcement. The expression of the apostles varies from surprise to perplexity, with some figures looking outward towards the viewer, while others look downward in despair.
The Last Supper is an iconic painting Christians represent as communion that still captures the imaginations of people of all backgrounds today. It represents da Vinci’s genius and remarkable talent, making it one of the most renowned works of art in the world.
