Description
Black and white photo of the Bradley house built about 1800 at the Revolutionary War Park, Camden, SC, USA.
The Bradley House in Camden, South Carolina is a stunning example of antebellum plantation architecture. Built in 1826, the house is still in excellent condition and stands as an important piece of history and a reminder of a bygone era. The house and its surrounding grounds have been carefully preserved, and it has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. The house was constructed in the Greek Revival architectural style, a popular style at the time of its construction, which emphasized symmetry and neoclassical elements. It is four stories tall with a two-story portico in the front that features Ionic columns. Inside, the main hall features a beautiful winding staircase, ornate plasterwork, and a grand piano. There are eight bedrooms, a library, and a formal dining room. The Bradley House was built for Thomas Bradley, a wealthy mill owner who owned several cotton plantations in the area. He and his family lived in the house until 1913, when the house was sold to another family. After several more owners, the house was purchased in 1948 by the Kershaw County Historical Society and they began a massive restoration project to restore the house to its original splendor. The restoration took several years, but the work was ultimately successful and in 1952, the house was opened to the public. Today, the Bradley House is a popular destination for many visitors to South Carolina's Lowcountry. Visitors can tour the house and explore its rooms, or enjoy a stroll along the grounds and admire the hundreds of azaleas that surround the house.
The house is open for tours from April to October, and visitors can also take advantage of an audio tour of the house's interior spaces.
The Bradley House is an important part of South Carolina's history, and a visit to this historic estate is sure to be an unforgettable experience.
This black and white print makes a perfect wall art hanging for SC history buffs.
