Wassily Kandinsky's Yellow, Red, Blue is one of the most iconic abstract paintings of the 20th century. The painting, which was first exhibited in 1925, makes up the apex of Kandinsky's geometric abstraction period and shows his move away from figurative works to an exploration of freely arranged, flat shapes of color. The painting consists of three large shapes—red, yellow, and blue—as well as several squares, lines, and curves that divide and connect the three forms. Each shape is made up of a single color and, when seen together, gives off a vibrant, energetic impression. It is believed that Kandinsky was inspired by the vibrant colors and textures he saw in nature—the red may represent fire, the yellow the sun, and the blue the sky. Kandinsky's shapes are thought to symbolize the inter-connectivity of all things and the relationship between visual art and the spiritual world. Through his use of bold colors and geometric forms, Kandinsky sought to communicate an emotional and spiritual experience to viewers. Today, Yellow, Red, Blue still stands as one of Kandinsky's most important works and has become a classic example of abstract art. It serves as an inspiration for many contemporary painters and is admired for its powerful use of color and form.
